- Porosity is about the cuticle — the outer scaly layer of the hair shaft. The more raised the scales, the higher the porosity.

- Medium (normal) porosity. The sweet spot: hair absorbs and retains moisture well, styles easily, and has a healthy shine. This is the condition of undamaged, healthy hair.
- High porosity. Scales are lifted and the surface is open. Hair gets wet almost instantly but dries just as fast, frizzes, tangles easily, looks dull, and seems to drink up product endlessly. This is by far the most common concern among people who bleach or rely heavily on heat tools.

- Bleaching and colouring. To reach the pigment, the chemical formula lifts and loosens the cuticle. After bleaching, it never fully closes again — which is why lightened lengths are almost always highly porous.
- Heat styling. Flat irons, curling wands, and blow-dryers on high heat overheat the hair shaft, causing scales to crack and flare outward.
- Hard water. Calcium and magnesium salts deposit on the hair as a film, prevent the scales from lying smooth, and gradually roughen the surface. Hard water is the reality in most cities, so this factor affects nearly everyone.
- Mechanical damage. Aggressively brushing wet hair, using tight elastics, and rubbing with a towel all scratch and lift the cuticle.
- Sun, wind, and chlorine. UV exposure and chlorinated water slowly wear down the surface over time.
The takeaway is simple: porosity is essentially accumulated cuticle damage. The more bleaching sessions and heat styling in your history, the higher your porosity.
Why porous hair is always dry and frizzy
The logic is straightforward. A lifted cuticle means open "doors":
- Moisture gets in — and straight back out. Hair gets wet in seconds but dries in minutes, never fully absorbing what it needs. There's a constant internal water deficit — hence the perpetual dryness and straw-like feel.

- Scales snag on each other. The raised edges of neighbouring hairs catch and interlock — leading to knots, tangles, and matting.

- Take one shed hair (from your brush) and place it on the surface of a glass of room-temperature water. Don't push it under — just set it on top.
- Wait 2–4 minutes and observe.
How to read the result:
- Hair stays on the surface — low porosity (water barely penetrates).
- Hair floats in the middle — medium, normal porosity.
- Hair sinks quickly — high porosity (the open surface absorbed water rapidly).
The test is approximate, and results can vary along the same strand (ends are typically more porous than roots). But as a guide for choosing the right products, it's perfectly useful.
Common mistakes
- Relying on oil alone. Oil seals — it doesn't hydrate. If there's no moisture underneath, you're "sealing in emptiness" — hair stays dry beneath a greasy film.
- Overdoing protein. Using Keratin products every single day leaves hair stiff, brittle, and glassy. Use protein in cycles, not continuously.
- Ignoring hard water. You can care for your hair all you like, but if there's mineral build-up on the shaft, the scales won't lie flat. A shower filter or an occasional clarifying wash can make a real difference.
- Rough-handling wet hair. Wet, porous hair is at its most vulnerable. Rubbing with a towel and brushing aggressively while soaking wet further destroys the cuticle — blot gently and detangle carefully.

Honestly: what care can change, and what it can't
No marketing spin here. Porosity is a condition that care genuinely affects: a consistent protein + moisture + sealing routine smooths the cuticle, and hair becomes softer, more manageable, shinier, and less frizzy. The results are visible and build over time.
But here's the honest caveat. A cuticle broken down by bleaching or years of heat styling does not regrow on existing lengths — cuticle cells are non-living, and there's no way to "regrow" them. Care doesn't turn damaged hair back into new hair: it masks and supports the damage, locks in moisture, and keeps your lengths looking decent — but it doesn't override physics. Truly healthy hair is hair that grows from the root without damage. The real strategy is twofold: care for what you have, and gradually trim the most damaged lengths as stronger hair grows in.
Anyone promising to "completely restore" bleached ends to virgin hair condition is not being straight with you. We won't say that.
