'Smart enamel', 'treatment polish', 'strengthener' — shelves are packed with promises to give you iron-strong nails in a week. Time for an honest look: what a strengthening nail polish can actually do, why you simply cannot 'heal' a nail from the outside — and how treatment polishes genuinely help you grow stronger nails.
Quick summary if you're short on time
- The visible part of your nail is dead tissue with no blood vessels or nerves. It can't be 'healed', but it can be protected, strengthened, and nourished.
- A strengthening polish works as a shield + treatment: a dense coating guards against water, household chemicals, and micro-damage, while active ingredients bond the keratin layers together.
- A healthy new nail grows from the cuticle area at roughly a millimetre a week — which is why real results are measured in weeks, not days.
- Brittleness is most often caused by water and degreasing, not 'calcium deficiency': washing dishes does more damage to your nails than your diet does.
- The best combination: a strengthening coat + cuticle oil every day.
Why nails break and peel
The nail plate is made up of dozens of keratin layers bonded together by lipids — think of it like plywood held together by glue. Brittleness begins when that 'glue' is washed away:
- Water and cleansing agents. Nails absorb water far faster than skin does, swelling and contracting with every hand wash. Those repeated 'swell–dry' cycles loosen the layers, causing the edges to peel.
- Degreasing. Sanitisers, nail polish remover, and household cleaning products dissolve the lipids between keratin layers.
- Physical stress. Nails used as tools — prying, scraping, peeling — create micro-cracks through the layers with every impact.
- Gel removal. Aggressive gel-polish removal is a whole separate issue, which we cover in our nail restoration article.
If your nails are suddenly breaking badly and you're also experiencing hair loss, it's worth seeing a doctor — nails are a reliable indicator of nutritional deficiencies. But in most cases the cause is far more mundane: water and chemicals.
What a strengthening polish can actually do
Since the nail plate is non-living tissue, there are three angles of attack — and a good treatment polish works on all three:
- Physical barrier. The coating itself absorbs impact, moisture, and chemical exposure. This alone makes a difference: protected nails stop peeling and can grow out undisturbed.
- Layer densification. Keratin, calcium, and proteins in the formula integrate into the upper layers of the plate and bind them more tightly — making the nail stiffer and more resistant to bending.
- Nourishing the growth zone. Vitamins and oils work at the cuticle, where the nail is still living and actively forming. This is where the quality of the nail you'll see in a month is determined.
An honest note on that 'results in a week' claim: within a week, the polish will densify and protect the nail that has already grown — you'll feel the difference quickly. But a genuinely new, strong nail only becomes visible once it has grown out from the cuticle — and that takes 4 to 8 weeks. Anyone promising 'full restoration in 7 days' is not being straight with you.
How to choose and apply
- Peeling tips, flexible nails — you need a densifying strengthener: apply 1–2 coats and refresh every 2–3 days.
- Nails damaged by gel removal, dull, with ridges — a restorative treatment with vitamins, used as a course over 3–4 weeks.
- Want manicure + benefits in one — a tinted treatment polish: looks like regular colour, works like a strengthener.
- Under gel-polish — a strengthening base coat; more detail on base coats in our gel-polish guide.
- Every evening — cuticle oil: it nourishes the growth zone that produces the strong nail to come. Why this is the most underrated step is explained in our cuticle oil article.
