Bond Actives for Hair: How They Rebuild Bonds Inside Bleached Hair

If you bleach your hair or go blonde, you've almost certainly heard the word "bond" — on packaging, in ingredient lists, in what stylists say. It sounds impressive, but what does it actually mean, and is there anything real behind it? Let's break it down straight: no magic, but no dismissiveness either. Bond actives are a genuinely effective tool — you just need to understand what they actually do, and what they can't.

What They Are and How They Work

Hair isn't a uniform "straw" — it's a bundle of protein filaments (keratin) held together by countless bonds. Some of the most important ones are disulfide bridges and salt bonds, which keep the hair structure strong and resilient. These are what make hair springy, stretchy in a healthy way, and resistant to breaking at the slightest touch.

When you bleach your hair, the oxidant reaches these internal bonds and breaks some of them apart. That's why bleached strands become porous, stretch like gum when wet, feel brittle, and look dull — the internal framework has been weakened. Chemical perms, frequent colouring, and regular heat styling do the same thing, just to a lesser degree.

A bond active (in our case, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate) works directly on this problem. Put simply, it penetrates the hair shaft and helps re-form the broken bonds — not by coating the surface with a film, but within the structure of the strand itself. The logic is the same as the well-known Olaplex approach: the goal is to restore internal bridges, not just smooth down the cuticle. After treatment, hair behaves stronger: less stretching, less breakage, better shape retention.

Important: this isn't a "nourishing cream" or a weightening agent. A bond active doesn't make hair smooth on its own — it repairs the internal framework that moisturising and smoothing ingredients then work on top of. That's why good formulas pair it with other actives rather than using it in isolation.

Which Cosmex Products Contain It

We include bond actives where hair is genuinely under stress — after bleaching, chemical processing, and frequent heat styling:

  • OverDose OverBond — a line built around the idea of bond restoration. In short, it's our "bond on demand."
  • Curly Expert — for curly and wavy hair, where curl definition depends directly on intact internal bonds.
  • Heat Defense — heat protection: here the bond active helps maintain structure during regular heat styling.
  • OverTone — care for coloured and toned hair, where both dye and bleaching have already worked on the hair structure.

You can browse the specific products in the catalogue: Cosmex Bond Lines. If you'd like to understand how hair is structured on the inside and why bonds matter so much, there's a dedicated article on hair structure. And for how bond actives differ from the classic keratin approach, we covered that in our piece on keratin hair restoration.

How to Get the Most Out of Them

Bond actives are about consistency and timing — not a one-time miracle.

  • Use them as part of a system. Bond actives repair the framework, but hair still needs moisture and smoothing. A shampoo paired with a mask or conditioner from the same line makes more sense than one product used alone.
  • The most critical window is around colouring and bleaching. If you're going blonde, it's worth incorporating bond care both before and after the appointment — that's when your hair needs bond restoration the most.
  • Don't rinse immediately. A mask or bond treatment needs time to work — leave it on for as long as the packaging specifies. Don't rush it.
  • Consistency matters more than an "intensive dose." Regular, steady care beats loading up your hair with product once a month and waiting for results.
  • Reduce the load. Use heat tools a little less often, turn the blow dryer down, apply heat protection before styling — this helps bond care results last longer.

Honestly: What Not to Expect

Now for the no-illusions part — this matters.

  • Bond actives don't promote hair growth or treat the scalp. They work on the structure of the shaft that's already grown, not on the follicle or the growth cycle.
  • They don't "weld" split ends back together. A split end is physically separated — only a trim fixes that. Bond actives help prevent new damage, not reverse old damage.
  • This is maintenance, not a full restoration. A bond active will make severely damaged bleached hair noticeably stronger and healthier-feeling, but it won't turn it back into untouched natural hair. There are no miracles — just smart care.
  • The results last as long as you keep up with the care. Stop, and the hair will gradually return to its previous state, especially if you continue bleaching.

One more thing. If your hair isn't just damaged but is actively falling out, you're noticing thinning patches, or you have a persistent scalp issue — that's beyond the scope of cosmetics. Bond actives won't help there, because the problem is an entirely different one. In that case, see a trichologist or dermatologist. Haircare products support your hair, but they don't replace diagnosis and treatment. Cosmetics make hair look and feel better — medical concerns are for doctors.

The bottom line: bond actives are a genuine, effective tool for damaged hair — especially bleached hair. Just think of them as structural repair, not a magic wand, and they won't let you down.

Olaplex?
