"Rich formula" — you'll find that phrase on almost every bottle. But a long ingredient list and a formula that actually works are two very different things. Let's be straight about it, the way a formulator would be with a friend: here's a breakdown of the active ingredients we genuinely use in Cosmex haircare, what each one does in plain language, and why we chose them. Nothing hidden — the full ingredient list for every product is on the packaging and in the product card. What we're doing here is explaining what those INCI names actually mean.
The short version, if you're in a hurry
- Actives work by function: some rebuild damaged hair, others lock in moisture, others work at the scalp level. There's no single ingredient that does everything.
- Concentration matters more than the list. A trendy active can be added in a trace amount just to appear on the label, or it can be included at a dose that actually does something. We manufacture in-house in Almaty and follow a formulation spec — every active goes in at the level it needs to be at to work.
- Restoration is about protein: hydrolyzed proteins, amino acids, and bond-building actives repair the broken internal structure of the hair shaft.
- Moisture is about water and lipids: glycerin, Panthenol, aloe vera juice, and hydrolyzed silk attract and retain water; squalane and oils seal it in.
- The scalp is its own category: niacinamide, caffeine, sebum-regulating agents, and botanical actives calm, tone, and bring order to the root zone.
- What you won't find in our formulas: harsh sulfates SLS/SLES, or a reliance on heavy silicones for instant-gloss effects.
Now, let's go deeper.
Why concentration matters more than the label list
This is where we have to start, because nothing else makes sense without it. A trending active can be added in a single drop — literally just enough to put the name on the packaging. Or it can be included at a working concentration that actually affects the hair. Those are two completely different products, even if the ingredient list looks similar at a glance.
This is often exactly where professional formulas differ from mass-market ones: the concentration of conditioning actives in a professional product is significantly higher. The label is not the result; the result comes from how much of an active is in the formula and what it's working alongside.
We make our products ourselves in Almaty, following a formulation spec — every active goes in at the dose it takes to work, not just to be listed. So what follows isn't a roundup of "trending ingredients" — it's a look at workhorses organized by function: restoration, moisture, and scalp care.
Actives for restoration and strength
This is the category for damaged, brittle, porous hair — when the internal protein structure has broken down from bleaching, heat styling, or time, and strands are snapping mid-length. What works here is protein and anything that repairs the bonds inside the hair shaft.
- Hydrolyzed proteins (Keratin, Collagen, silk). "Hydrolyzed" means broken down into small enough fragments to actually penetrate the hair cortex and replenish the degraded keratin structure from the inside. Think of them as patches for the places where the protein has crumbled away. These are the foundation of the Keratin and Repair lines — both focused on strength and fighting breakage.
- Amino acids. These are the building blocks that proteins are made of. They're smaller than protein fragments and fill in porosity from within — working their way into the micro-voids of damaged hair and restoring elasticity. The hair stops feeling like straw and starts to have some give again.
- Bond-building actives. A separate category — these don't work with protein, but with the bonds inside the hair shaft: the exact ones that break during bleaching. Bond actives restore those internal connections, which is why they matter most after lightening and color-stripping services.
A simple way to picture it: proteins are new building material, amino acids are fine filler for the cracks, and bond-building actives are the weld on the load-bearing beams. Together, they deliver the effect of hair that's actually stronger — not just smoother on the surface.
Actives for moisture
The second major challenge is water. Dry hair looks dull, frizzes, generates static, and refuses to behave. Two groups of ingredients handle this: those that attract moisture, and those that seal it in so it doesn't evaporate.
- Glycerin and Panthenol (provitamin B5). These are humectants — they draw water toward the hair and hold it there. Panthenol also softens and soothes the scalp, and it's one of the most well-studied, versatile ingredients in haircare altogether — hard to overuse, easy to love.
- Aloe vera juice and hydrolyzed silk. These are the moisture-attracting actives in the Hydration line: aloe and broken-down silk hold water within the hair shaft and give dry hair a full, alive look — not a slippery surface coating.
- Squalane and plant-based oils. These are the sealers — lipids. They don't draw water in; they lie over the surface, smooth the cuticle, and prevent moisture from escaping. That's why moisture and nourishment work as a pair: some ingredients bring the water in, others keep it there.
The short version: humectants without lipids is like filling a bucket with holes, and lipids without humectants is sealing an empty container. A well-built formula uses both together.
Actives for the scalp
The scalp is the soil the hair grows from, and it has its own specific needs. The actives that work here are entirely different from those applied along the length: their job is to calm, tone, regulate oiliness, and address flaking.
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3). Supports the scalp's barrier function and tone, and helps with sensitivity and a tendency toward irritation. Think of it as the "calming" active for anyone whose scalp reacts to everything.
- Brown algae extract and caffeine. The root zone in cases of weakened hair benefits from stimulating actives. The Trichology anti-shedding line uses Cystoseira extract, while caffeine paired with copper peptide and biotin appears in the advanced growth-activation formula. These are valued specifically for scalp and root-level work.
- Sebum-regulating and antifungal actives. These address oiliness and the underlying cause of flaking — that's the Anti-Dandruff line. They don't just "mask" flaking with moisture; they target the root cause.
- Botanical actives (aloe, rosemary, tea tree oil, and others). These gently soothe and condition, complementing the formula and making scalp care a more comfortable experience overall.
Why we treat the scalp as its own category: you can restore the lengths all you want, but if there's irritation, excess oil, or flaking at the roots, the hair simply won't look healthy. What you won't find in our formulas
Honesty means talking about what we deliberately leave out. A good formula is defined not only by what goes in, but by what doesn't.
- No harsh sulfates SLS/SLES. Our professional line is built on mild surfactants. Harsh sulfates produce a rich lather and that "squeaky clean" feeling — but they strip the scalp and wash out everything, including the moisture we worked to put in. - No heavy silicones for instant-gloss effects. Silicone can make hair look great right now, but it builds up, weighs hair down, and masks the real condition of the hair instead of improving it. Our full take is in the piece on silicones.
- No "of-the-moment" actives. We choose ingredients by function and compatibility — not because they're getting buzz. A beautiful name on a label means nothing if it's there for show.
The approach is simple: put in what works, at the level it takes to work — and leave out what looks good on a label but gets in the way of results.
