"My nails keep peeling and breaking" — one of the most common complaints we hear. There are many reasons this happens, and not all of them can be solved with cosmetics. Let's be honest about it: why nails peel, what actually strengthens them, what role oils and base coats play, and when the issue isn't about nail care at all — and you need to see a doctor.
Quick summary if you're short on time
- Nails peel most often due to over-drying (water, household chemicals, acetone, frequent gel polish without breaks) and physical damage — less commonly from deficiencies or illness.
- Strengthening means restoring moisture and lipids (oils), protection (a strengthening base coat or treatment), and addressing the root cause — not just "taking some vitamins."
- Oils and strengthening treatments work cumulatively: expect results in 1–2 months, as a healthy nail plate grows in.
- If your nails have changed suddenly (colour, shape, severe brittleness) — it may be a health signal, and you should see a doctor.
Why nails peel
The nail is made up of layers of keratin held together by moisture and lipids. When that "glue" between the layers breaks down, the free edge splits. The main culprits:
- Over-drying. Frequent contact with water and household cleaners without gloves, acetone-based removers, hand sanitisers. Water is especially tricky: the nail absorbs it and swells, then shrinks as it dries — causing delamination.
- Physical trauma. Using nails as tools, filing back and forth (which shreds the layers), and roughly peeling off gel polish.
- Frequent gel polish without breaks. The nail plate itself isn't harmed by the coating, but aggressive removal and filing thin it out over time. Breaks are necessary.
- Nutritional deficiencies. Low iron (ferritin), zinc, biotin, or protein. This isn't a problem oils can fix — it's about diet and lab work.
- Health conditions and age. Thyroid disorders, psoriasis, fungal infection, hormonal changes. Nails also become drier with age.
The takeaway: strengthening starts with removing the cause. If your hands are constantly in water without gloves, no oil will save your nails.
What actually strengthens nails
1. Oils — restore moisture and lipids
The number-one at-home tool. Nail and cuticle oil replenishes the lipid "glue" between keratin layers and makes the plate more flexible — and a flexible nail breaks less easily. Strengthening oils also contain actives that work directly on the plate. Apply daily, massaging into the nail and the surrounding skin. For a deeper look at oils, see our article on cuticle oil.
2. Strengthening base coat or treatment
Base coats with fortifying ingredients (such as acrylic polymers) create a protective structure over the nail plate: it flexes less, doesn't split mechanically, and has time to grow out healthy. Especially beneficial for thin, pliable nails.
3. Gloves and gentle handling
- Gloves when washing dishes and cleaning — non-negotiable.
- File in one direction only, never back and forth.
- Never peel off gel polish — always remove it properly.
- Use a glass or soft nail file instead of a coarse metal one.
4. Nutrition (when the problem is internal)
If nails keep peeling despite consistent care, get your ferritin, vitamin D, B12, and zinc levels checked. Biotin can help — when a deficiency is confirmed. This is a question for your doctor and lab results, not guesswork.
What not to expect
- There are no instant results. Nails grow about 3 mm per month; full replacement with healthy plate takes 4–6 months. Oils and base coats work on the growing-in portion.
- A "strengthening" polish won't repair an already-split edge — file it down carefully, then let healthy nail grow in.
- Vitamins won't help without a deficiency. Taking biotin "just in case" is pointless if your levels are fine.
When to see a doctor, not reach for an oil
- Your nails have suddenly changed colour, shape, or thickness.
- Severe peeling across all nails with no clear care-related cause.
- Suspected fungal infection (yellowing, thickening, crumbling) — see our article on tea tree oil.
- Nail separation from the nail bed — onycholysis.
Cosmex products that can help
- 7-in-1 Strengthening Nail Oil — nail plate and cuticle care in one.
- Strengthening Nail Oil — concentrated nail treatment.
- Acry Base — strengthening base coat with acrylic — a protective structure for thin nails.
- Dry Cuticle Oil — everyday care.
In short: peeling nails come down to dryness, physical damage, and sometimes health. Remove the cause, restore moisture with oil, protect with a strengthening base coat, and wear your gloves — and within a couple of months, a strong, smooth nail plate will grow in.
